Two Kinds of Falmouth Homes

Falmouth is really two towns for our purposes, and Route 1 is the dividing line. East of it, along Route 88 through the Foreside, Waites Landing, and Town Landing, homes sit close enough to Casco Bay to take salt directly. West of it, through Blackstrap, West Falmouth, and Pleasant Hill, houses sit under heavy woods on larger lots. Those two halves need different treatment, and knowing which one you are on is most of the job. Why We Soft Wash Instead of Pressure Wash

On the Foreside the problem is salt. It is hygroscopic, so it pulls moisture from the air and holds it against cedar shingle and painted clapboard long after the weather clears, and that lingering dampness is what keeps algae and mildew coming back. Rinsing the salt off is the part that actually breaks the cycle, and it is the step most homeowners skip. West of Route 1 the picture flips. Blackstrap Hill Community Forest alone runs close to 600 wooded acres, and subdivisions tucked under that kind of mature canopy stay shaded and damp. There the issue is black roof streaking and moss on north-facing planes, caused by Gloeocapsa magma feeding on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Falmouth also has a lot of housing built from 1980 onward, which puts much of the town’s siding and roofing right in the window where two or three decades of growth have accumulated.
