What Clogged Gutters Actually Do to a Maine Home

Most gutter articles talk about leaves. In Maine, the leaves are the easy part. What matters here is what happens when the temperature crosses freezing forty times between November and March.

Ice dams. When a gutter is packed with debris, meltwater from the roof has nowhere to go. It sits, refreezes, and builds a ridge of ice along the eave. The next melt backs up under the shingles, because water moving uphill under ice does not care which way the shingles overlap. That is how a gutter problem becomes a ceiling stain in an upstairs bedroom. Every winter we get calls from homeowners who think they have a roof leak. Often they have a gutter that was never cleared in the fall.

Fascia and soffit rot. A full gutter is heavy. Wet debris plus standing water plus ice pulls the gutter away from the fascia board, and the water that gets behind it stays against the wood. On the older housing stock around Cumberland Mills and Frenchtown, much of it built before 1940 with original trim, that rot moves faster than people expect.

Foundation and basement water. A working gutter system moves roof water away from the house. A clogged one dumps it straight down the wall and into the soil at the foundation. Over a few seasons that shows up as a damp basement, a cracked walkway, or washed-out landscaping on the drip line.

How We Clean Gutters

We clear the troughs by hand, then flush the full run with water to confirm flow. We check the downspouts, because a clean trough draining into a blocked downspout is still a blocked system. We look at the hangers and the pitch while we are up there, and we tell you what we see.

If a downspout is packed solid, we clear it. If the pitch has gone flat and water is pooling in a section, we will tell you that too, even though re-pitching a gutter is not something we do. You should know about it either way.

We do not use pressure inside a gutter. High pressure on an aluminum trough dents the metal and drives water up under the shingle course above it.

When the debris is dry, we can often clear it from the ground. We run a professional high-reach air system on carbon fiber poles that reaches 35 feet up with no ladder on the house. It is not equipment most companies in this area have, and it means less time on a ladder over your landscaping and a faster job on the right kind of debris. Wet or packed debris still comes out by hand, which is the only way to do that part properly.

We clean up the debris. If you have a brush pile or woods on the property, we put it there. If there is nowhere to put it, we take it with us at no extra charge. Either way the gutters get cleared and the property gets left cleaner than we found it.

When to Clean Gutters in Maine

Fall, before the freeze. This is the one that matters most, because a gutter that goes into winter packed is the gutter that builds an ice dam. We clean gutters year round, but fall is our busiest stretch by a wide margin, and there are only so many working days between the leaves coming down and the first snow. That is why we start booking fall gutter work in September and October rather than waiting for every last leaf. If your property can be cleared early, taking an earlier slot gets it done at a better price and guarantees you are not competing for the last few weeks before winter.

Spring. Winter pushes shingle grit, seed pods, and whatever the storms brought down into the troughs. A spring clean-out resets the system before the heavy summer rain.

Once we get into November, gutter cleaning gets harder. Debris freezes into the trough, footing is worse, and the work takes longer, so our late-season pricing reflects that. It is another reason to get on the schedule early rather than calling the week before Thanksgiving.

If you have pines directly over the roof, you need more than twice a year. Pine needles do not decompose the way leaves do, and they knit into a mat that water runs straight over.

Gutter Guards: The Honest Answer

Guards reduce how often gutters need clearing. They do not eliminate it. Plenty of homeowners around here paid a large installed price on the promise that they would never think about their gutters again, and then called us a few years later because the gutters were full. A guard is a maintenance reducer, and it should be sold as one.

Fine debris still gets through most systems. Pine needles bridge across the mesh on many of them. A guarded gutter that has never been serviced can be just as packed as an open one, with the added problem that you cannot see it from the ground.

Yes, we clean gutters that have guards. Most companies either refuse these jobs or pull every section off and charge you for the labor. We have worked out a process where we can usually flush the system with only a few guards removed, which keeps the job manageable. It is still more work than an open gutter, so guarded systems do cost more, and we always ask whether you have guards before we send an estimate so the number you get is the number you pay.

Not all guards are worth keeping. The cheap plastic screens that come with a lot of installs tend to do more harm than good, and in most cases we recommend removing them. Aluminum micro mesh is the system that actually performs in this climate, and it is what we recommend and install when the situation calls for it. Under heavy tree cover a good guard earns its cost. On an open lot it usually does not.
